This story begins with a new drama, where that story takes place in the early 18th century. During that period, England was at war with the French and the events may still be turbulent. Queen Anne decides to take over the throne, and her close friend, Lady Sarah the Country, decides instead to try to reconcile her opinion with Anne. Events may change completely when a new server called Abigail arrives. Shortly after Abigail's presence, Sarah takes that maid under her wing and sees Abigail as a chance to return to her aristocratic roots that seem to be shattered.

There are no heroes in The Favourite; there are only sad creatures driven by their various needs. There is, however, a morbid morality to the proceedings, one in which decadence is its own punishment.January 24, 2019

"The Favourite" is an uproarious send-up of the aloofness of royals, and comes alive thanks to its sterling ensemble cast (Nicholas Hoult is also worthy of note, playing a young British statesman) and Lanthimos' pristine direction.February 22, 2019
In the end, The Favourite is a haunting reminder of the limits of control.February 20, 2019

Colman's performance as Queen Anne is worthy of Charles Laughton in its lack of vanity and its ever-building pathos.February 27, 2019
The movie singlehandedly upends decades of unimaginative habits by British filmmakers who have generally treated history as well-behaved pageants with period-perfect costumes and lavish settings.February 15, 2019
Olivia Colman, Emma Stone and Rachel Weisz all deliver career-best performances in this quirky look back at the politics of yesteryear...December 21, 2018

It is Colman who steals the film from everyone - Lanthimos included.
