The movie follows two young 'hippie' bikers, Wyatt and Billy, as they set off on a cross-country trek to New Orleans after scoring cocaine in Mexico, then re-selling it in California. Their journey discloses a period of counterculture and intolerance through spectacular landscapes.

"Easy Rider," even for those uninterested in the legacy of 1960s counterculture, punches the viewer in the gut with its hopelessness and emptiness.June 26, 2007
The film may be a relic now, but it is a fascinating souvenir -- particularly in its narcissism and fatalism -- of how the hippie movement thought of itself.January 26, 2006
[A] simplistic amalgam of travelogue and the zoom lens.March 04, 2013
Fonda and Hopper, it should by this time go without saying, give immense performances.May 20, 2003
Hopper, Fonda and their friends went out into America looking for a movie and found instead a small, pious statement (upper case) about our society (upper case), which is sick (upper case). It's pretty but lower case cinema.March 11, 2013

This is a glorious widescreen vision of a hot and bothered America, at once beautiful and lost. Yes, it has dated, but its pessimistic last gasp ("We blew it...") still carries a prescient sting.June 26, 2007
None of the forced violence, lawlessness, rapist, gratuitous speed aspects of the motorbike clan in this perceptive film.March 25, 2003
It plays today more as a period piece than as living cinema, but it captures so surely the tone and look of that moment in time.
