Am I the only one who hates this movie? The only thing that makes CMBYN watchable is the spot-on performance of Timothee Chalamet. Even that can't compensate for the fatal flaw -- the Oliver character (Armie Hammer) is aloof and pretentious and the screen play doesn't make any case for why Elio should be drawn to him at all. This omission isn't helped by the fact that Armie Hammer is a lame actor with the depth of a cardboard cutout. (Seriously. How does he get work?) We're supposed to just accept that Elio has found something irresistible about Oliver. We (the audience) should have been made to feel the same way so we can go along for the ride. Perhaps a sexier actor with some gravitas could have drawn us in -- but even then, the screen play is lacking some crucial elements.

"Call Me by Your Name" is enough to make you move to the town of Crema, even if your rational self realizes the director Luca Guadagnino trades in a heightened, miragelike state of mythic yearning.December 14, 2017
A complicated movie, erotic yet never graphic, heartfelt yet highly stylized. Chalamet delivers one of the year's best performances.December 13, 2017

It's a rare movie that knows when to move and when to stay still. Call Me By Your Name ... is just such a film, lazy as a late-afternoon dragonfly one moment, rash and rushed as young love the next.December 14, 2017
